Kindergarten

I've been struggling over what to do with Danny for school next year. With a November 30th birthday he just misses the cut-off to start Kindergarten. He's been at Horizon Hills for 2 years and has had an amazing teacher who has given a great foundation to encourage a love for school. Emotionally and socially he's not ready for a regular Kindergarten. Schools nowadays are kind of sad. What we did in 2nd grade is now done in most Kindergartens. Learning to read and write is now expected before the end of Kindergarten. Pushing that on a child that isn't emotionally no matter how smart they are could be a recipe for disaster.

Danny's current school has an amazing developmental Kindergarten. Unfortunately, 2 years ago the Thousand Oaks school district took it over. (administration only) Since we don't live in the district we will have to get a permit. I toured the class today and was so amazed. Danny would absolutely love it and really thrive. OUr thought is to send him to this Kindergarten and the following year send him to Kindergarten at our home school.

My friend's daughter repeated kindergarten because they didn't feel like she was socially ready. She's in 5th grade now and loves school. I've lost track of how many awards she has won and how many times she's been on honor roll. You know Danny and know what's best for him. The school advised my friends against holdning their daughter back because they would regret it. Turns out, it was one of the best decisions they've made! She was much more confident the second time around.
